(More customer reviews)I have been using two Rat Zappers for a few months now, with mixed results. They seem to work most reliably when the batteries are absolutely fresh. In particular, ordinary alkaline batteries seem to be good for one or two kills only. The recommended (and considerably more expensive) lithium batteries last a little longer, but the claim of "3 months or 15 rodent kills" seems to be marketing hype. Even with the optional "Rat Pack," the lethality diminishes rapidly after a few kills. Without absolutely new batteries, I often find the kill light will be flashing but nothing will be in the trap, suggesting that a rat received a non-lethal shock. That is a rodent that has now been trained to never set foot in such a trap again.

What this product desperately needs is an AC adapter, so it can deliver consistently lethal shocks where an outlet is available. Alternatively, some better mechanism for determining when it's time to replace the batteries would be helpful, besides trying to judge spark length or the relative brightness of the LED indicator.

I have found traditional snap traps to be more consistently effective for rat control, though I still use the Rat Zappers in areas where snap traps would be a danger to pets or children. Just be prepared to spend a fortune on batteries.

This feeder is indestructable and raccoons can't get into it, plus, it holds several weeks worth of seed, so it's great!

(More customer reviews)This is the best squirrel proof type of bird feeder there is - as far as I have been able to determine in several decades of trying to find such an article.I have owned many other types, including the Hertitage green metal monster weighted-perch feeders.I don't know how stupid your squirrels are, but here they just hang by one foot from the hanger or the perch jointof the Heritage feeders and stick their heads into the slot, holding the feeder open with their fat necks while they gorge themselves.Poles don't stop them.Greased poles don't stop them.Silicone spray and WD-40 don't stop them.They just keep working at it until they wear the stuff out.

This style of feeder, where the feeder itself is inside a substantial baffle, is the closest thing to squirrel proof I have found.I own several in different sizes.To successfully deter squirrels, look for these features:The baffle should be far enough from the tube or feeder that a squirrel absolutely cannot reach the feeder within.Ideally there should NOT be a tray on the bottom of the feeder.Spilled seed should be able to fall through to the ground for the ground feeding birds.If there is a tray, squirrels will just keep coming back for the seed they can reach near the edge, and so they will hang on the feeders preventing birds from coming.

Lately my squirrels have figured out how to chew the top of the plastic feed tube that extends above the baffle, just under the metal cap, until they open up the entire top of the feeder.If the manufacturers would fit a metal ring around the top of the feed tube, they could make this feeder even more squirrel-"proof".

Anyone who succeeds in devising a truly squirrel proof platform or perch type feeder should be awarded some kind of Nobel Prize!

(More customer reviews)I got one of these for my 100lb 12month old bullmastiff and he gutted it within 15m.Actually, he ripped thru an ear and from there managed to possibly swallow part of the sqeaker.I got my doggie to barf up his dinner, which he had just eaten about 15m before and didn't see any of the squeaker in it, just a bit of fur from the tail.

That said, before I surrendered the poor squirrel over to his doom, i was rather impressed by it.

The search continues for a toy my dog cannot destroy (well, quickly).

(More customer reviews)I had a female squirrel chew through a gable vent and make a nest for herself (and babies) in our attic.This trap is a good choice for squirrels -- rat "snap" traps are too small.The model 1040 trap is a slightly better choice -- it has the same width and height, but is a little longer, making it less likely that the squirrel's "butt" will hold the door open.

Keep the instruction sheet packed with the trap.It describes how to adjust the sensitivity of the pan.Trip it a few times yourself to make sure you are fully familiar with it.If squirrels still manage to steal the bait, try smearing peanut butter on the underside of the pan -- it's harder for the squirrels to steal it that way.

Now, the part you DON'T want to know.You are not doing the squirrel any favors by relocating it.Many states (mine included) specifically ban relocating squirrels and other wild animals.At best you are giving your problem animal to some other homeowner.At worst, squirrels and other small mammals are territorial and will die if transported to unfamiliar territories where the current residents are unlikely to welcome them anyway.Also, all wild animals harbor diseases and parasites (fleas, ticks, bot flies, etc.) -- transport the animal and you spread local infections.

The animal really does have to be humanely destroyed.

At first the squirrels would try to feed and the mechanism worked well and the leaves covered the feeding holes. The squirrels left and we thought all was good. Then we noticed they were staying around more. I took a close look at it and guess what, they have chewed the plastic around the feeding hole so that now it is larger than the leaf covers. They can eat to their heart's content. Also, chipmunks do not weigh enough to make the mechanism work. From day one, the chipmunks were able to feast to their hearts content. The idea behind this feeder is good. However they need to put metal around the holes. That would make it more squirrel proof, however, chipmunks could still feast. Don't waste your money on this one, unless the manufacturer starts to put metal around the holes.

Stokes Select 38002 Squirrel Proof Tube Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)I have the same bird feeder but purchased from Tractor Supply Co. at a lower price.In any case, one reviewer astutely pointed out the Achilles Heel of this product as being the vulnerability of the little plastic lock to the top cap that slides up and down one side of the hanger.I noticed that our squirrels had started to chew through this on mine as well, but hadn't finished the job.Well, it should be a no-brainer that you just can't make stuff that's allegedly squirrel-proof out of plastic.The designers should have known this, unless they're counting on you buying a new one after the squirrels get into the one you have by chewing through the lock and diving into the seed from the top of the seed container.

However, there's a simple solution that should take care of this problem.Get yourself two metal key rings; the ones I used measure about 1 inch across.Attach one on one side of the metal hanger, the other one on the other side.Then get two small padlocks of the size to lock a briefcase or suitcase (I got mine at Target, and selected two of the combination lock type, but you could use a key version if you want).Open one of the locks, and then use it to lock together the keyring with the closest part of the top of the metal cage, doing this so there's little if any play between the two.Do this again for the hanger's other side.This should prevent the top from being lifted open regardless of whether the plastic lock has survived the squirrel attack.You can unlock it easily enough when it's time to replenish the seed.If you measure the length required to lock the hanger to the cage part, you could probably dispense with the key rings I used and just use padlocks with the metal loops of the appropriate length.

You have to hand it to squirrels - when it comes to getting to food, they're incredibly resourceful.But I don't think they will be able to chew through the metal I used.However, if they figure out the combinations to my padlocks, I really will think that the end of the world is at hand!:-)

I was pleasantly surprised to see my feeders full and only birds eating from them. If you are unfamiliar with working with hot peppers be very careful using this product. Wear gloves and possibly a mask.The new website for C&S ( wildsuets.com )states to use an oil coating on the seed before applying the powder:Mix only five pounds of seed at a time!Mix the seed well with several sprays of a non-stick vegetable spray, or two teaspoons of cooking oil before applying the "Squirrel Away TM".The birds do not taste the oil or the powder. Therefore, they do not know it is there.Mix the powder one teaspoon full at a time, taking care to mix thoroughly.ALLOW TREATED SEED TO SIT 20 MINUTES BEFORE FILLING THE FEEDER!.
