(More customer reviews)The narrow diameter (8") allows the squirrels and large birds (such as grackles) to hang on one side and tip the birdfeeder inside the cage so that they can still reach the seed. It needs to be much wider in diameter. The 15" cage around the Droll Yankee feeder is the perfect size--I can tell you from experience that that feeder indeed foils large birds AND squirrels, but is retailing at $85. It would be the ticket to all our birdfeeding woes if it were 15" diameter. Unfortunately, no one--even Droll Yankee--offers that size in a retrofit cage. Ticks me off, as they obviously know that is the magic dimension, and us poor suckers that already invested $35 in a tube feeder think we might save money by buying a retrofit cage for $35 vs. a whole new system for $85. They also need to make the feeder stationery in the retrofit cage so that larger animals cannot use the tipping method to get their pie holes closer to the feed.

I have spent ridiculous amounts of money and time on these contraptions. No more money out of my pocket until someone comes up with a 15" diameter retrofit cage.The prices for these are crazy. The poly-coated wire mesh can be bought for pennies a foot.I hope this deters someone from buying more of this cr*p that the manufacturers seem purposefully designing not to work right.

(More customer reviews)We bought this solar feeder less than 3 months ago. It's very nice looking; I liked the finish and the solar lights that come on at night. The birds seem to like it okay, although it's the least visited of our 4 feeders. We put a squirrel baffle over it to help protect it from the elements; squirrels haven't actually been too interested in this one so that hasn't been a big concern.

I don't have a problem with the metal cord and the lid on this one, like another reviewer stated. The lid goes up and down on the chain a little goofy when adding seed, but the top does close. Sometimes I have to hold onto the top part of the chain to help straighten it to get the top down.

If you're having issues with the solar lights being too dim or not turning on, replace the battery in the top with a better rechargeable battery. (Don't forget to recycle the old battery!) The one that came with the feeder was a 600 or 900 mAH, if I recall. Most typical rechargeable batteries you will pick up now will be 1800 mAH or higher. With the higher mAH the light is brighter and stays on longer. It doesn't last very long though, even with the better battery. Honestly, it's really pointless here in WI because I've yet to see one bird flying around in the dark looking for bird seed!

Here ARE the problems we're having with ours, again, after less than 3 months of use:
1. the color has already faded a lot, although I haven't seen any finish actually coming off
2. the 4 little perches keep coming loose. I check them once a week and almost every time at least one is unstable, making it unlikely a bird will perch there
3. the inside bottom of the feeder is at least 60% rusted and wearing through. The metal base is VERY thin. When I clean it out, I can see light coming through the bottom because of the holes through it (there were no holes in the bottom when we got it!) Not too good considering it's filled with very small seed. As I mentioned it's protected from the elements, and I empty/clean/dry/refill after any significant amount of rain. It obviously got wet at some point, but really? Shouldn't bird feeders be at least somewhat resistant to precipitation issues?

I expect this is going to last another few months before I have to dispose of it. It's unfortunate such an attractive little feeder could be made so poorly. This feeder was a waste of money, and I don't recommend buying it.

(More customer reviews)While I like the look of this bird feeder very much: appreciate how much seed/fruit/nuts it holds: and am amazed at the amount of birds it attracts, (perhaps because of it's size and color) we're not crazy about what else it attracts. This product states that it's squirrel proof. Not only is it not squirrel proof (since we go outside to find squirrels hanging from the side of the feeder and emptying it quite quickly)but it also seems to attract and feed rats. cringe worthy, but true....we evidently have a rat family living underneath our pond. They climb up the tree, across the branches and hang off the side of the feeder as well, having no trouble eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have good taste because we only use high grade nuts, fruits & berries in the feeder. At first we couldn't figure out how a feeder of such large size could be empty within 4 or 5 days. Perhaps the "cage" around the feeder needs to be moved a bit further away from the holes in the inner plastic feed holder so animals can't reach it? In any event, the feeder does it's job and we've now become avid bird watchers in our own back yard. A bit of a redesign might be in order.

(More customer reviews)I love the Droll Yankees company because of the superior construction of their products and their no questions asked guarantees.Unfortunately this feeder has lots of problems.I sold it at my store in the hopes that only small birds could fly under the baffle and larger birds wouldn't be able to use it.(We have an extraordinary number of white-winged doves in our area who turn into real feeder hogs.)It did work for that reason.The small birds could fly in under the baffle and feed and the doves never figured it out.They just hung on top and pooped all over the baffle and so it needed to be cleaned constantly.That aside, the really big problems with this feeder were that the small birds, although they could fly under the baffle and eat, would sit in the seed area and also poop while they ate.NOT GOOD for birds' health so it required lots of going through the seed to get poop out.On top of that, the seed shifts around as the birds eat, so the thing was always lopsided and lots of seed spilled out the bottom as well.Finally, it was a disaster in the wind.The bottom seed holder swings around wildly in the wind.I finally quit selling it in my store.

Yankee Whipper Bird Feeder 180 Degree Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great feeder. I had it up for 3 weeks, no squirrels. Plenty of Cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. However, today I saw a squirrel clinging to the holes and sides of the feeder.

The feeder is suspended buy very thin 30 lb. monofilament fishing line from a very high branch; feeder is about 7 feet from ground. Would be difficult for a squirrel to slide down the fishing line - but possible, I suppose.

Edit - now I know he leaped up from the nearby giant Rhododendron. I moved the Whipper away from the Rhody - but too close to the trunk of the tree - about 5 feet. Witnessed many squirrels leaping from trunk of tree onto Whipper. They grab onto the birdseed holes.

Imoved the Whipper - now it is at least 6 feet off the ground, but over the lawn - will need to move it again.

I liked having the feeder over the Rhody - empty sunflower shells fall onto the ground under the Rhody, out of sight. Rhody gives the birds plenty of cover - they perch in the Rhody before darting over to the feeder, then dart back.A good thing as I saw a hawk peering down yesterday from a tree in the next yard.

Not even a day passed before my squirrels popped the lid off the top.There is no electricity at the top to stop them. I spent another $20 and quite a few hours and modified the top and wiring to electrify that as well. Thank goodness I am handy. This could prove frustrating if you are not handy, nor clever too. The birds can't get to the seed at the last 2" from the bottom and that quickly rots and drives the birds away.The inside is especially difficult to clean and I needed a long stick to pry out the damp solidified seed and a lot of patience to clean it.A lot of what looks like metal in the photos is silver painted plastic and while I assembled it right from the box I broke the plastic top off and had to return it for another. Don't plan to hand the metal wire bar in the picture over the branch or you will break the top right off.You need to hang this off a wire. The holes for suspending the metal wire bar are especially poorly designed.The battery cover is attached with tiny screws so be prepared to lose them. All of these problems could have easily been remedied by the staff that designed it. What a shame they didn't. Overall its excellent at keeping squirrels away.I was so inundated with sparrows after the squirrels were gone I scratched my head and wondered what have I done?

As long as this is placed away from the trees or other structures that the squirrels can launch from, it is impossible for them to get the seed. However, I had to move the feeder from it's location to put in a new deck, and when I tried to put it back, one extension arm broke off as I was trying to put the auger back into the ground. I now have it supported by the remaining two arms wedged under the edge of my deck. Overall an excellent product. I've had this for over a year.

(More customer reviews)We live in New Hampshire and cannot have most bird feeders in the summer because they will be destroyed by the black bears.This is the first bird feeder that we can hang high in a tree and not have it emptied by the local red and gray squirrels.Before we got this we tried the usual approaches:

Red pepper - Spraying the feeder with an oil and pepper mix didn't work.
Cage-type feeders - This works for gray squirrels, but any cage with a small enough mesh to keep out red squirrels will also block the birds.
Baffles - A regular feeder needs to be 8 feet from any branch or the squirrels will jump to it.This is impossible to arrange in most trees.

This Squirrel Scatter feeder is a very simple solution.We have it hanging on a branch outside our second-story window.It only takes one or two experiences with the shock from this feeder and even the most determined squirrel will leave it alone.Every now and then a squirrel will stop back and very carefully attempt to eat from the feeding ports.The mild shock immediately sends him scrambling away.The construction quality also seems quite good.Highly recommended.

Squirrel Proof Accent Select Bird Feeder, Green Review

(More customer reviews)This is the best squirrel proof type of bird feeder there is - as far as I have been able to determine in several decades of trying to find such an article.I have owned many other types, including the Hertitage green metal monster weighted-perch feeders.I don't know how stupid your squirrels are, but here they just hang by one foot from the hanger or the perch jointof the Heritage feeders and stick their heads into the slot, holding the feeder open with their fat necks while they gorge themselves.Poles don't stop them.Greased poles don't stop them.Silicone spray and WD-40 don't stop them.They just keep working at it until they wear the stuff out.

This style of feeder, where the feeder itself is inside a substantial baffle, is the closest thing to squirrel proof I have found.I own several in different sizes.To successfully deter squirrels, look for these features:The baffle should be far enough from the tube or feeder that a squirrel absolutely cannot reach the feeder within.Ideally there should NOT be a tray on the bottom of the feeder.Spilled seed should be able to fall through to the ground for the ground feeding birds.If there is a tray, squirrels will just keep coming back for the seed they can reach near the edge, and so they will hang on the feeders preventing birds from coming.

Lately my squirrels have figured out how to chew the top of the plastic feed tube that extends above the baffle, just under the metal cap, until they open up the entire top of the feeder.If the manufacturers would fit a metal ring around the top of the feed tube, they could make this feeder even more squirrel-"proof".

Anyone who succeeds in devising a truly squirrel proof platform or perch type feeder should be awarded some kind of Nobel Prize!
