(More customer reviews)While I like the look of this bird feeder very much: appreciate how much seed/fruit/nuts it holds: and am amazed at the amount of birds it attracts, (perhaps because of it's size and color) we're not crazy about what else it attracts. This product states that it's squirrel proof. Not only is it not squirrel proof (since we go outside to find squirrels hanging from the side of the feeder and emptying it quite quickly)but it also seems to attract and feed rats. cringe worthy, but true....we evidently have a rat family living underneath our pond. They climb up the tree, across the branches and hang off the side of the feeder as well, having no trouble eating their breakfast, lunch or dinner. They have good taste because we only use high grade nuts, fruits & berries in the feeder. At first we couldn't figure out how a feeder of such large size could be empty within 4 or 5 days. Perhaps the "cage" around the feeder needs to be moved a bit further away from the holes in the inner plastic feed holder so animals can't reach it? In any event, the feeder does it's job and we've now become avid bird watchers in our own back yard. A bit of a redesign might be in order.

Yankee Whipper Bird Feeder 180 Degree Review

(More customer reviews)This is a great feeder. I had it up for 3 weeks, no squirrels. Plenty of Cardinals, chickadees, nuthatches, etc. However, today I saw a squirrel clinging to the holes and sides of the feeder.

The feeder is suspended buy very thin 30 lb. monofilament fishing line from a very high branch; feeder is about 7 feet from ground. Would be difficult for a squirrel to slide down the fishing line - but possible, I suppose.

Edit - now I know he leaped up from the nearby giant Rhododendron. I moved the Whipper away from the Rhody - but too close to the trunk of the tree - about 5 feet. Witnessed many squirrels leaping from trunk of tree onto Whipper. They grab onto the birdseed holes.

Imoved the Whipper - now it is at least 6 feet off the ground, but over the lawn - will need to move it again.

I liked having the feeder over the Rhody - empty sunflower shells fall onto the ground under the Rhody, out of sight. Rhody gives the birds plenty of cover - they perch in the Rhody before darting over to the feeder, then dart back.A good thing as I saw a hawk peering down yesterday from a tree in the next yard.

Red pepper - Spraying the feeder with an oil and pepper mix didn't work.
Cage-type feeders - This works for gray squirrels, but any cage with a small enough mesh to keep out red squirrels will also block the birds.
Baffles - A regular feeder needs to be 8 feet from any branch or the squirrels will jump to it.This is impossible to arrange in most trees.

After extensive research online,I chose the Arundale Sky Cafe.Now it is all birds all the time.
About a month or so after I put the Sky Cafe into action,I mounted the fly-through feeder on a post,with a large(22 inch),baffle.The sqirrells have been unable to gain access to this feeder,Which makes very happy.
The interesting thing is that the birds prefer the Sky Cafe,about four to one.
I highly recommend this feeder,if you follow the instructions for placement,i think you will be quite satisfied as well.

I gave up a few years back then realized how much i really miss watching the birds. So I decided there has got to be a "real" squirrel proof feeder.I saw this one and told myself that if i saw one darn squirrel on this or even a blue jay, it was going back to the retailer and i'm getting my money back.I've had it 2 years and NOT ONE DARN SQUIRREL!!!!Not only that, the cardinals were able to feed off on this feeder. It's rather a cool innovation. The perch are design to only support birds of cardinals or smaller. Anything heavier, the perch collapse and they either fall off or fly off, then the perch springs back.I'm actually looking to buy a couple more of the feeders.Worth every darn penny 'cuz I know this is going to be the last one and the high quality of this birdfeeder will be around for years to come.

(More customer reviews)My husband had this on his wish list and based on the other reviews I almost didn't order it for him. Others said birds couldn't get seeds out and didn't use the feeder. We have lots of birds using this feeder at all times and I once counted 10 birds on it at the same time. Some cling to the wires and others sit on the perch to eat. The top has kept the snow and rain off of it and it holds a ton of seeds at one time (not filling it as much). Also the squirels have yet to destroy it unlike many other feeders we have had. I would definately buy this one again.

(More customer reviews)Here is a rough video from my point and shoot camera of the Twirl A Squirrel I purchased in action. The thing stopped spinning mercifully to let the second squirrel jump off. I am using a squirrel resistant feeder ( cage drops down from squirrel's weight to close seed openings )and it still works great. They don't even try to jump on any more and have to depend on whatever the birds throw out to scavenge...I wound up using an all thread rod through the top of the feeder to transmit the torque from the twirler as it broke a clothes hanger rod I had fashioned. 100% satisfied!!!

Droll Yankees YF Flipper Bird Feeder Review

(More customer reviews)I have been battling the squirrels with limited success for years. Either the feeders didn't stop the squirrels at all or they were so dang ugly I didn't want them in my yard. The squirrels even ate a few of the "squirrel proof" feeder I tried.
I'm pretty cheap, but the Droll Yankee Co. seems to have a good reputation so I wasn't too reluctant to part with the bucks for this feeder. My first impression was that it is a lot larger than I expected and seemed to be sturdier than most feeders.
I plugged it in and let it charge overnight (it charges like a power screwdriver), filled it with black-oil sunflower and hung it in my favorite bird feeder tree the next morning. My Carolina-chickadees and Cardinals were feeding within thirty minutes, Mr.Squirrel made his first attempt after about an hour. There is really no way I can describe what followed. Let's just say I have some really freaked out squirrels around my house.
I have had the feeder up for over a month, the squirrels have been forced to feed from the spilled seed on the ground and the feeder is still operating from the original charge.
This feeder is is worth every penny and then some. I wish I could give it more than five stars.

I cut some plastic replacements from a milk jug and these worked for a month or so, but more of the originals keep falling out. Three are gone, and the feeder is not a year old yet. My feeder hangs under the house overhang and so is not rained on; no problems with the spring, though the "stop" that keeps the cage from going too far down fell out fairly soon (I just put a piece of wire in its place).Grackle can feed at this feeder well.Larger birds such as blue jays and a large woodpecker will occasionally hang onto it in some way, but they don't persist. Purple finch and gold finch like it; I get some cardinals even (with black oil sunflower).

However, it no longer works this year, because the springs that operate it have broken. They are on the outside, exposed to the weather, and they just didn't last long enough. The other thing, is that the squirrels learned to grab ahold of it and shake it, which sprayed the seed out for them to get. I'm looking at a new feeder, this time with the springs on the *inside*!

The squirrels had been draining my previous feeder almost daily.The feeder survived squirrels in 3 different states over the course of our various moves and did a wonderful job before finally meeting its end during a 60 mph wind gust. I obviously hadn't fastened it well enough and it crashed into a boulder on its way down.It performed so well, however, I'm getting another!
