(More customer reviews)We were having big problems with raccoons getting on our deck nightly and destroying flower pots, bird feeders, and anything else they thought might contain food.Got the two trap combination, as it was cheaper than buying the larger trap singly (?!?), and immediately set it out on the deck at dusk.The next morning I found the trap had been tripped externally (no 'coon), and dragged about 15 ft while being stripped of its bait (cat food).Changed the trap's location to a corner of the deck, placed a chair on the open side to prevent sliding and reach-ins, and reset it.Over the next four mornings I caught four raccoons, which I then spirited well away from the house.We have not had any raccoon incidents since.Be advised the trap door is spring-loaded, which traps better than gravity doors, but is more difficult to open when you want to release a scared and sometimes aggressive animal.Also be forewarned: trapped raccoons (and probably other animals) will seriously soil whatever the trap is placed on, and do they ever stink!Also, feral raccoons are a primary carrier of rabies, so use due care.Finally, be aware that you may not catch exactly what you intended.This happened to me years ago with a HavaHart trap (gravity door) when, instead of catching a rabbit, I caught a skunk.By slowing approaching the trap with an opened blanket in front of me (so the skunk couldn't see me), I used it as a cover, and was able to put the trap in my van and drive it away without getting sprayed.I then placed the covered trap down and slowly turned it over, allowing the door to open freely.I left the area for awhile, and the skunk was gone when I returned.The point of all this is, you can't release anything this way with a spring-loaded trap.The manufacturer would do well to incorporate a door opening lever or device which would allow the trapper to be at least reasonably clear during release.

(More customer reviews)Anyone who deals with feral animals on a regular basis will do well to have their own Havahart trap, rather than getting one for a limited time from the Humane Society; that way when the opportunity for capturing the animal presents itself, one is ready for the moment. Also, trapping some wary or streetwise animals can take patience, gradually placing the food further in the trap. A few critters take time to get used to the mesh under their paws, and feel secure enough to venture into the trap, and occasionally it's longer than the fortnight the Humane Society allots for the rental.

For me, it's the feral cats that accumulate in my apartment complex garage, scrounging for food and seeking shelter. Depending on the estimated health and age of the animal, one can either trap and then neuter/spay and release, or take them to the local animal control. The purpose is to stop the cycle of misery caused by the endless multiplication of unwanted cats, some born to mothers so hungry they don't have the milk to feed them.

The Havahart Professional Cage Trap is ingenious in design, and sturdy in construction. If you keep your trap clean and dry, it will last for decades. I have used my 32" Model 1079 for everything from small kittens to a large tom that must have tipped the scales at 15 + lbs. A word of caution: Always cover the top of the cage with a towel after catching an animal, because a trapped animal will often try to reach up and scratch your hand on the handle, and also, the less the animal sees, the less fearful it will be.

(More customer reviews)When we moved, my poor cat went crazy and wouldn't be handled, touched, approached, or even looked at.We knew she'd calm down once all the commotion was over, so our friend lent us one of these traps for her.

One day in an empty house later(save, of course, the trap baited with her very favourite food), we had a VERY unhappy cat in a very sturdy trap.

My only complaints are:

*the carrying handle is too short or the "guard" is too small.She was able to take swipes at me until I covered the trap with a blanket and carried it using a glove.

*the release mechanism is also too uncomfortably close to the unhappy trap-ee.Leather gloves solved this once again.

Otherwise, it worked perfectly!

(By the way, my cat calmed down after about two days and is sitting next to me now, purring)

Havahart 5265 Spray Away Motion-Activated Water Repellent Review

(More customer reviews)I have three motion detecting sprinklers, two made by Contech (ScareCrow) and one by Havahart. Both of them are excellent for repelling deer (two years of experience with high deer pressure) but the Contech ScareCrow is more dependable. Although the Scarecrow sprinkler is more expensive, it is worth the price. The Havahart does not come with a guarantee other than a 30 day return policy whereas the Contech ScareCrow sprinkler has a two year warranty and they stand behind it. I had one fail after 22 months of use and they replaced it promptly. Also the motion detecting range, sensitivity, and adjustment is more stable and dependable in the Contech ScareCrow. The only time I've not had the ScareCrow work was during a period of very high humidity during some rainy weather when it failed to go off during a period of less than a day. On the other hand the Havahart motion sprinker is much more erratic in its performance and sometimes fails to work for brief periods.

We have a lot of deer in our area, and if she kept our plants sprayed right after a heavy rain washed things off, the deer didn't bother the plants. If she forgot, it only took a day or two before the deer ate the plants.

The local store stopped carrying Deer Off this year, so I decided to purchase it on Amazon. When I got it, my wife noticed that the color of the concentrate was different than before. It seems that they have a new formula, and it DOESN'T work! (Their website confirms that they have "improved" their formula.) I contacted the Havahart company directly to see if they would trade me for the old formula, but they didn't even answer my email. I strongly suggest that you stay away from this product unless they return to their original, proven, formula.

(More customer reviews)I had a female squirrel chew through a gable vent and make a nest for herself (and babies) in our attic.This trap is a good choice for squirrels -- rat "snap" traps are too small.The model 1040 trap is a slightly better choice -- it has the same width and height, but is a little longer, making it less likely that the squirrel's "butt" will hold the door open.

Keep the instruction sheet packed with the trap.It describes how to adjust the sensitivity of the pan.Trip it a few times yourself to make sure you are fully familiar with it.If squirrels still manage to steal the bait, try smearing peanut butter on the underside of the pan -- it's harder for the squirrels to steal it that way.

Now, the part you DON'T want to know.You are not doing the squirrel any favors by relocating it.Many states (mine included) specifically ban relocating squirrels and other wild animals.At best you are giving your problem animal to some other homeowner.At worst, squirrels and other small mammals are territorial and will die if transported to unfamiliar territories where the current residents are unlikely to welcome them anyway.Also, all wild animals harbor diseases and parasites (fleas, ticks, bot flies, etc.) -- transport the animal and you spread local infections.

The animal really does have to be humanely destroyed.

Havahart 1020 Two-Door 10-by-3-by-3-Inch Cage Trap for Mice and Rats Review

(More customer reviews)About 15 years ago, our apartment building began having occassional mouse problems, with my own apartment receiving 2 or 3 visits from a stray little fellow each year. I was truly appalled to see some of the more modern solutions in the stores -- I'd always had a problem with the idea of the traditional spring traps and poisons, but the houses containing sticky-bottomed floors seemed unduly cruel. I don't want to kill the little SOBs, let alone torture them; I just don't want them as roommates.

The Havahart live trap is a good, humane, cost effective solution to it all. The mechanism is a simple bait-table connected to a set of two thick and sturdy exterior wires which -- on a new trap -- trips very easily (a bit of delicate, deft handling of the exterior wires is needed to get the trap to not spring closed during setup -- those with large fingers will have a difficult time with it I would think). Following capture and release, a good cleaning in a bucket of bleach, well rinsed, and the trap is ready to go again.

For the more romatically inclined, there's a good feeling to be had in preparing a Wine & Cheese Platter (actually, I use toilet tissue and peanut butter) in my attempts to be a good host to the occasional visit from Mr. Mouse. The trap works well enough that normally I see no evidence of a mouse in my kitchen prior to him appearing in the trap -- over the years, I've come to regard the visitors less as disease-ridden destructive vermin, and more as a cute if unkempt old friend who gives me a good excuse to swab the kitchen in bleach.

I normally replace traps every five or six years, and not because they break or become non-functional-- Over time, the trap tends to get a funky dark tarnished patina which is simply too unattractive to my eye. With reasonable care, these traps can be a one-time purchase which need no replacement.

Aesthetic loss aside, after a year or so of use, it helps to oil the moving parts of the trap -- without this, it's possible for the mouse to enter the trap, steal the bait, and leave without tripping the mechanism. Be careful also of too heavy-handed handling of the trap when cleaning -- although sturdy enough, the walls of the cage can be bent with a bit of pressure, which will prevent easy movement of the doors and bait-table.

This is, to my mind, one of those superior products which one always returns to. Whoever crafted the phrase "build a better mousetrap" never saw one of these. It's cheap, it's permanent, it works.

(More customer reviews)When I got these traps (I ordered 2), I was immediately impressed.They are sturdily made of a powder-coated metal, probably steel, and have a very nice trip mechanism.I bought them solely for chipmunks, and immediately baited them and set them out.For several days, I found the trap tripped, but empty.I thought the trigger mechanism was faulty, but the next day found a chippie inside.An hour later I got ready to take the trap out for relocation, and it was empty.Hmmm.I measured the door, and it is about 4" wide, but the opening is 4 ?", and the door slides freely from side to side.That ?" opening is plenty of room for chippies or rats to walk right out.So, with this trap, you give your chippies a nice meal, then they laugh and wave as they stroll out to cause other mischief.

If you are trying for squirrels or small rabbits, this should work fine.But for chippies, the poor door design makes it worse than useless.

(More customer reviews)After three weeks of trial and error, I finally caught my first squirrel.I started with the Havahart 1025 and found my prey kept getting away.I realized the trap was too small for the little bugger because my bait would disappear even after the trap had sprang.I took it back and got me the next biggest trap that Lowes carries:Havahart 1092.For those who are familiar with the 1092, it's quite huge and made for trapping stray cats, raccoons, and similar sized animals.Though the trap was big it was easy to handle, bait, and set.I left it out for several days without much luck.The little bugger wouldn't take the bait behind the trigger plate.He would nibble at it from the outside of the cage and left me cleaning up after the scraps.Again, I packed up the trap and took it back.I searched the Internet, looking for a retailer that carries the medium-sized traps, specifically the Model 1084.I wasn't interested in online purchase due to the hassle of returns.I didn't find many within the area.One of the major carriers of Havahart traps, however, was Ace Hardware.There were many in the area, so I called around asking for the 1084.After many tries, I found one store who has it.I made my trip there after work and had my trap set that same night.The Model 1084 was small and light, so I was able to position it in the tree where I had the most activity.Unlike the 1092 which opens from both sides, you have reach in to load the bait.I left the persimmon in the back of the cage.When I came back the next day, I found a side of the persimmon had been nibbled away.Fluster but unwavered I decided to hang the persimmon this time and reposition the opening of trap toward a branch where the little bugger can easily access.To my surprise the next day, the cage door had be shut and what looked like a brown ball from faraway turned out to be the little bugger that has been trashing my yard the past year.I was so elated; and I have Havahart to thank for for constructing such a great contraption.

I've always had a small problem with squirrels in my roses, but they only ate the ones that were easy to get to and I was content to let them have them, since there were so many others. Then an adolescent squirrel fell in love with them and braved the thorns to eat EVERY ROSE on my bushes. He'd wait until new roses budded and snatch them before they bloomed, no matter how high they were. He'd pull stalks over to get them and was wrecking my bushes. As an animal lover, I knew that I had to find an alternative I could live with.

Deer Off is amazing. I sprayed it ONCE (about 6 weeks ago) and the squirrels now give my plants wide berth. The smell must be offensive to them, but the scent is mild to my human nose and faded to nothing about a minute after spraying. I HIGHLY recommend it. I didn't expect it to work this well!

(More customer reviews)I had squirrels in my attic and got this to get rid of them.I put it near the tree where they would come down from the house.I use bread smeared with peanut butter to stick it to the trip plate to help assure it goes off.

After catching the first dozen (only maybe 3 were from my house) I was afraid they were returning from my drop off spot about 2 miles away [Nice wooded area with a large pond].I started spray painting spots on their tails to be sure they weren't being territorial and returning.None have come back.

I have now caught 26 and think I have cleared my entire neighborhood of gray squirrels.When I startedwould catch one per hour, now I leave it for days with nothing and haven't seen any around lately.
