This feeder is very easy to fill and to date no squirrels has been observed successfully getting any seed out of it. Which isn't to say they don't try, but so far their schemes have failed them. The saga continues....

(More customer reviews)I have a pole with a hook to hold bird feeders and it is the type that sticks in the ground. Squirrels and chip monks constanly
get up and eat the seeds in the bird feeder.The baffle comes with a bracket, like a collar that is attched on the pole, and it is fixed in place by tightening the screw.The split in the baffle makes it convenient to put on.It then can be closed by hooking the ends together [they come with fold shape like a "U"]. Best to keep up the baffle as high off the ground as possible because the squirrels can jump up at leat 3 feet I think.I use this in combination with the supposedly squirrel proof feeders and works effectively, especially with the red squirrel. They are small and very smart.Also, make sure to keep the feeders away from other pole feeders and trees.Those squirrels are very determined and can jump fairly far.For the money, this is one of the most effective anti-squirrel guard.Highly recommended.

(More customer reviews)This feeder is a must for those with healthy populations of finches /and/ squirrels.The feeder itself is very well made of quality materials, from the calibrated moving metal squirrel baffle to the thick, UV-resistant tube and coated metal lid and perches.I also bought the larger "Squirrel Buster Plus" regular feeder through Amazon made by Brome and found it to be equally, if not even more, well made.Both are extremely effective: my neighborhood is older and ringed by dozens of mature Pin Oaks teeming with squirrels.They've had free run of my yard for years (the last owners were definitely not gardeners), pulling open suet cages, burying seeds and acorns everywhere, chattering madly at the dog... and then came the Brome feeders.Both are in easy reach of the ground, and the squirrels can climb the pole, but to no use: the baffles slide down every time and they get squat (instead of fat) from my feeders.Huzzah!I would use these feeders even if I didn't have squirrels, I like the dark green metal finish and slim construction, and I really like not needing extra feeder pole baffles, plastic cones, etc. to keep out the squirrels, who are back to their regular job of eating the seed that falls to the ground. :)

NOTE about shipping:this feeder was shipped "as is" in its original box, a shortcut that I did not appreciate.These feeders are pricey, as other reviewers have noted, and worth it, but they DO contain calibrated springs and moving parts, the product needs to be shipped inside a shipping box.The first Brome feeder I ordered was shipped properly, no idea why this one was not.Luckily it suffered no damage and is an outstanding product in action.

(More customer reviews)I had to make my own collar to hold the shield since my pole was larger than the one supplied.The pesky squirrels had already figured out how to eat through the prior baffle purchased at Home Depot and had gained access to the feeders, however this clear, see-through design has stopped them.While it's smaller than my previous baffel, they are confused by it and have given up their pursuit... at least for now.This also was the best bargain I could find.I'd give it 5 stars if the collar was adjustable and didn't have to go over the top of the pole.

You do have to take care in your placement, or the squirrels will hang onto a nearby fence or branch and feast away, but once placed properly, you'll frustrate them!

(More customer reviews)We are looking for another feeder, so when I got to this page I thought I would tell you why this is the one we're going to purchase.

We got our first `7536' feederover 10 years and we still like it.For one thing it holds an entire grocery store size bag of sunflower seeds and for anotherthe birds love it.Frequently both sides are filled with our feathered friends while there are others waiting in the tree for their turn.[Thus our interest in another feeder.]

Presently we have Chickadees, Nuthatches, Cardinals, House sparrows, Wrens, Gold finches, the occasional flicker and small woodpecker visiting.When we lived it Texas it was convenient to exclude those pesky, though attractive, jays.

Initially I think (okay--my memories a little faded after a decade!) it did keep the squirrels at bay, but that hasn't been the case for many years.In fact, our local `free-range' squirrel has the glossiest coat you can imagine.But we don't really care as he is so jealous of the feeder that he keeps other intruders away.

The lapse in squirrel-proof-ness is probably due to years of collected grime and dust that clog the springs.That and just the passage of time.

Four Stars.Our feeder is doing just fine after 10 years.I think the other reviewer is wrong in saying that this feeder is available for less money.I think what he has seen is the one sided version of this same feeder.I say this because we have searched around a bit in order to save money.

And about the squirrels--we saw a PBS special one time that showed what a gray squirrel would actually do for lunch. They had these squirrels climbing, jumping, and riding in little wagons through a long tube to get to a bird feeder.I concluded after watching those experiments that `proofing' was a ridiculous notion.LOL.

my dog loves it (i am not sure it is reciprocal though! the squirrel suffers a lot!) even my drawf bunny got into the game. they fight over the head and the tail of the squirrel; who bit it, who drag it.... hilarious! now they're both too light to squeak it but once in a while the dog squeak it with his teeth and the excitement starts over!!!!
nice!!! and it's brown so i don't see all the dirt...i like that
finally the size... it is perfect for my pomeranian BUT don't call that LARGE, i don't know what standard is used to qualify that as large but i don't agree this is maybe a medium mat something like a square of 11'. i think a large dog could have fun with it (and probably destroy it in seconds!) but not as much as a medium or small dog.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product because the squirles were eating all my bird seed. I was happy with the product and it was easy to assemble, fill and hang. My only complaint is that in order for it to be 100% squirel proof it needs to be hung at least 18 inches from the nearest post. My hanger only has about 12 inches of clearance, so it's not 100% squirrel proof in my situation, but it still cuts down on the amount they can reach, and my seed that used to be gone in 2 days has lasted over 2 weeks now. It would have been helpful to have that stipulation on the outside of the box instead of only on the insert inside the bos, or else I would have taken that into consideration in my purchase. On the whole I am happy with the purchase.

(More customer reviews)I haven't actually tested it out, but I'm not sure that's necessary for this review.If there's food available, the million squirrels that inhabit my backyard are going to go after it.Whether a squirrel would leave bird feeders alone because the squirrel feeder is there, I do not know, nor do I really care.I like birds and squirrels.Therefore, this review primarily has to do with the construction of the feeder.It's an all metal construction, feels solid and weighty, and no component is thin or flimsy.I don't know if everything is hand-welded, but all of the welds appear to be well-done.I don't think this thing is going to break at any point soon.The item came disassembled in a modest white box, and the only instructions were in the form of a small diagram printed on the outside of the box.Fortunately it was not difficult to put together because the instructions were pretty much useless.It does not tell you how to mount it outside, but that should be easy for anyone to figure out.There's a metal stick that slides into the wheel at one end, and the other end is a flatish piece with 4 holes.It comes with 4 long wood screws and also two U-shaped pieces that would be used if you wanted to attach it to a pole.For the corn, there are three metal spokes that attach to the wheel.At the other end, you attach a triangular piece that appears to have a modified screw welded to each corner.You just screw the ears of corn on to each of the 9 total screws.

(More customer reviews)We had a nasty case of "Squirrels in the Attic" not too long ago.We set up a few of these traps (slightly shorter version) with little more than peanut butter sandwiches and patience.For the next four days we put the bait out around the traps to allow them to get used to them.On the fifth, we set the traps with a peanut butter sandwich stuck to the trigger plate.The next day we bagged our first squirrel which was released unharmed 10 miles away.

I have only one complaint.It seems black birds like peanut butter too but thankfully they never triggered the trap.At first I thought the trigger plate wasn't going to be sensitive enough for the squirrels, but I guess you can't argue with results.

We bought the whole "Hide-a-Squirrel" stump with the squirrels for her for Christmas, and she loves them! She takes the squirrels all around the house with her. They go in her bed, in bed with her humans, and she has never destroyed them like she has every other stuffed toy with squeakers. Any other stuffed toy has become like "road-kill" in a few days, as she chews them until she gets the squeaker out and then pulls the all the stuffing out. These are like her little babies. We just had to upgrade the squirrels because she has started to wear them out from the doggy "slobber" that is always on them from carrying them in her mouth. Overall, a great, and rather affordable investment. Would recommend these to anyone with a terrier who loves to chew their toys!

Heath Outdoor Products HB-1 Squirrel Baffle Review

(More customer reviews)This squirrel baffle is just about as cheap as they come here on Amazon.(The best and cheapest ones can be found either at a local Tractor Supply company, or at the Tractor Supply website).Its not quite as big or effective as either a squirrel deterrent or protection from the weather as a dome style, but it is certainly far better than nothing. (And a whole lot cheaper). The problem with the basic design of this baffle is the swing away system it employs. The same ineffective system that is unfortunately employed in a lot of squirrel baffles.Even ones a lot more expensive than this one. The theory behind it is that the squirrel will lay down its paw on top of it with its full weight, slip off, and then fall to the ground as the baffle swings out of the way. Unfortunately this is one of those times when something sounds most logical in theory, but is a total bust in actual practice.Squirrels very quickly figure out the baffles rational and set out to defeat it.That is to say, they just come to learn to hang their feet from above and use the baffles swing away design to their advantage by it moving freely out of their way.Just about everyone that has a bird feeder then sees the usual result.A squirrel hanging down from above upside down feasting on and spilling your expensive seed. This baffle can be made far more effective by a simple redesign.Just unscrew the two hooks that merge in the middle of the dome from above and underneath and screw in a lock nut so it is flush with the baffle on top and below.Then screw the hooks back in.The swing away design is then defeated and the baffle will remain stiff and very hard for the squirrel to move out of the way with his body due to the counterweight of the feeder underneath. Also, installing the nut stiffens the baffle sufficiently enough to prevent it from being tossed around by the wind as some other reviewers have mentioned. Trust me, it is very simple to do and it makes this very reasonably priced baffle most effective indeed.I recommend this baffle if you're on a budget and desire something that works very well with the simple modification described above.Order several at once to make the shipping charge worth it...
